Ka Shing Chinese Restaurant

Me and my husband love dim sum and had been wanting to visit a Chinese restaurant that has dim sum for quite some time and we finally went one yesterday.

Today we’d be reviewing one of the more authentic Chinese restaurants in Dublin, Ka Shing Chinese Restaurant which is located on a busy street of Dublin’s south inner city.

We are more or less experienced dim sum eater and have been to Hong Kong a few times trying their local delicacies. When we visited Beijing we tried dim sum, when we lived in Taiwan we practically had dim sum every week. So it is safe to say that we can tell if a restaurant does a good job making their little buns and steamed yum yum.

Ka Shing Chinese Restaurant

As we went into the restaurant, we were asked to sit at the table that was right in the middle of the passage so we asked if we could move a bit to the back of the restaurant. The waiter had us waiting when she went to get the permission of someone seemed to be the owner and the waiter was obviously scolded yet still came back to us with a positive answer. Therefore we were led to the inner section of the restaurant and were seated somewhere more quiet and spacious which was nice. I didn’t care too much about the decor and design of the restaurant and considered it even a bit old fashioned but it got its charm I guess. There are chandeliers hanging on the ceiling, marble tables and ornate dining chairs. If you come with a bunch of friends and sit around the table I’m sure you would enjoy the atmosphere especially when you order a table of tasty dim sum haha.

They offer you three kinds of menus, one only shows their dim sum with pictures which is very helpful in picturing what you might get, one is with other familiar options of different kinds of dishes that go with either plain rice or noodles, such as sirloin steak served with black pepper sauce, mixed seafood with XO sauce, etc.  And the last one lists options for group dining and set menus. They do have a wide variety of fried rice, chow mein and curry dishes. All menus are written in both English and Mandarin.

We were here this time only for their dim sum so basically ordered only from the dim sum menu except that my husband is a fried squid lover so we ordered a plate of deep-fried squids with salt and chili. We decided to order two rounds so we wouldn’t get carried away by our empty stomach. It has been a good strategy for us when it comes to ordering food when we are hungry. We tell ourselves we can always order more so for now we just order a few things and most of the time we find ourselves satisfied and full after the first round without ordering more than we can eat. For the first round we ordered the deep-fried squids, pork siu mai, Shanghai steamed buns, custard buns and shrimp rice rolls.

I’m not sure why but the female owner was not very friendly when taking our order and she didn’t even say hi to us. She gave off a sense of indifference from the very beginning to the end. The other staffs are quite friendly and prompt however whenever the owner showed up she had some kind of nasty vibe with her, not to mention she allegedly scolded the waiter when we asked for a different table.

Here we go.

酥炸香辣魷魚 | deep-fried squids with salt and chili

We had a mixed feeling of this dish. It was tasty indeed however it didn’t seem to have the value. This dish has only a few squids and it was 8 euros we were a bit disappointed by the portion. The squids are fresh and the coating is not too thick. It is well seasoned and very crunchy however I’m not sure if I’d feel comfortable spending 8 euros on such a small dish next time.

Their rice rolls are very nice. The rice wrappers are soft, tender and has a good thickness. Each roll has two big prawns and the soy sauce flavor is simple and delicious.

When I saw this buns on the menu I told my husband we had to order it! I was dying for something doughy and sweet just like this for days.

It was one of my favorite dishes that day. The custard cream is sweet and warm and just oozes out from the bun. I so enjoyed each bite however my husband didn’t like this sweet bun and he doesn’t understand why I like it so much. Well that’s okay, more for me then. I think it is just a little bit above average good however since I haven’t had such sweet buns for quite some time so I was deeply satisfied by it.

Their pork siu mai does a good job too being not too dry and tough and it is juicy and flavorful. We had some really not so impressive siu mai, which was renown, back in Beijing the last time we visited so we were a bit worried when we ordered this dish. Fortunately it turns out quite nice and tasty.

Shanghai steamed buns

These little cuties sitting in the spoons for they are too juicy. This one can easily be the most tasty dim sum of the day. The skin is soft and thin and the filling is exceptionally fresh and palatable. It is very juicy and the flavor is much delicate. We both enjoyed this one very much. It is one of those dishes that you’d remember after finishing all your food. Though it is not the best Shanghai steamed buns(Xiaolongbao) I’ve ever tried it is indeed delicious and the filling even has a bit of alcohol.

Now we had finished our first round and we decided to go for second round. We ordered the classic pork and cabbage fried dumplings and Tianjin Goubuli buns.

Tianjin Goubuli buns

Second round dishes shared a common theme and that is they all looked different from the menu pictures lol. Anyways maybe it is us that have poor memories. We thought the Tianjin Goubuli buns were supposed to be round but they came in this fish tail like shapes. Regardless its odd looking as a bun, it is quite tasty. The bun itself is tender and has a nice doughy chew, the filling is savory and you can actually taste bamboo shoots in it. The filling is not exactly juicy but it’s quite nice. However the preparation was bit of a mystery. I couldn’t tell if they have pan-fried the buns or not because it looked like they kind of did. Anyhow the skin was slightly charred and crispy.

豬肉高麗菜煎餃 | pork and cabbage fried dumplings

This dish looked like actual fried dumplings while on the menu picture, the dumplings looked longer and thinner, like the classic pot-stickers. That’s why when this dish was served we were a bit confused. I’m pretty sure these are dumplings meant to be steamed or boiled. I highly suspected that they are boiled dumplings in disguise of pot-stickers. I know you must feel like I’m just rambling but you know the dough for making dumplings and fried dumplings are different right? And the texture are a bit different as well, right? I mean if you use regular dumplings to make fried dumplings it is kind of a lazy job, innit? Fried dumplings deserve to be treated as their own kind not a fried version of dumplings, yes?

豬肉高麗菜煎餃 | pork and cabbage fried dumplings

Nevertheless it is tasty and juicy. The filling is fresh and delectable and it is indeed pan-fried to a point where you have a semi crispy skin. It is not too bad at all but for fried dumplings it could be better. And I still think it is just dumplings that are fried.

We liked the food. They all tasted fresh and came quickly. The waiters were friendly and prompt, the total opposite to their owner who wore a long face most of the time. I think they do have a good menu but we didn’t try any of their dishes so I couldn’t really say if they are any good. Their dim sum overall are quite decent and well priced, ranging from 4 to 8 euros per selection and the flavor is quite authentic.

The waiters speak Mandarin and English. We first ordered our food in English and they wouldn’t give up and kept coming back asking us, more like me, questions in Mandarin lol. To notice that they do charge a 10% service fee and I’m not really happy with this extra charge because of the owner’s offhand manner. I did notice that she’s more attentive to those bigger table with more guests though. I do not approve this kind of discrimination.

If you come here, I’d recommend rice rolls with prawns and the Shanghai steamed buns.
